EVENTS FROM OTAGO

The Otago Scottish Heritage Council monthly meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month, except for January and July, at the Athenaeum Library in the Octagon at 7pm. All welcome. Clan Donald Otago is a member of the Council.

The Otago Gaelic Club meets monthly on the fourth or fifth Wednesday from 7-8pm, everybody welcome. The Otago Gaelic Club needs now to be built around the learning of the Gaelic language, unlike its predecessor, the Gaelic Society, which was founded in 1881, with all native Gaelic speakers. Scottish Country Dancing is held at the St John’s Hall, 373 Highgate Dunedin. Monday nights from 7 to 9pm.

Unfortunately, the 11th Hororata Highland Games have been cancelled. The Games are a significant outdoor event, attracting around 10,000 people annually and can only operate at Level 1.

Mackenzie A & P Show, Fairlie – Canterbury
Easter Monday 5th April 2021.

Clan Donald will be represented at the show. The Mackenzie A & P Show is one of the largest one day shows in New Zealand, regularly attracting 12 /15,000 people.

Several Clan members have already booked accommodation for the nights of 4th and 5th of April at the Pinewood Motels, 25 Mount Cook Road, Fairlie.

The luncheon as usual, will be in the Highlander Bar at the Northcote Tavern. All Clan Donald members and friends are invited to be there from 11.30am onwards. This is the eighth year for our luncheon at the Northcote tavern, and judging from previous years, we anticipate it will be another great success. The Northcote Tavern is renowned for its great menu and in particular their Sunday Roast. The Signals Pipe Band will be present and will play a few tunes in the Garden Bar.

This event is now in its 10th year and is well established and very successful. A great day out for all. It regularly attracts over 300 competitors in various events. The “Have A Go” events are very popular and provide a great opportunity for visitor participation. Luncheon & Movie – Auckland
Saturday 17th October 2020

Luncheon and movie at Ryders Cinema, 177 Riversdale Road, Avondale, Auckland. From 11am till 3pm. Lunch consists of a choice of roast meats and vegetables cooked in a coal range. Beverages; BYO wine and beer etc. Also bring your own glasses.

The film is “Geordie”. Geordie MacTaggart is a “wee’ (small) Scottish schoolboy, and the son of a gamekeeper. After he sees a newspaper advertisement for a bodybuilding correspondence course offered by Henry Samson, he sends for the course. One day, he gets a letter from Samson, who suggests he take up hammer throwing. At the minister’s urging, Geordie reluctantly enters a Highland Games. He initially makes two bad throws, but after the unexpected appearance (and encouragement) of Jean, he wins with his final throw. Two members of the Olympic Selection Committee visit him and invite him to join the British Team for the Melbourne Olympic Games in Australia.

This year we will visit Darfield and use that as a base for a number of activities in the surrounding areas. Likely events will be visits to Homebush and the Glentunnel Museum, Saturday evening dinner at the Darfield Hotel and Sunday brunch at the Glentunnel Golf Club.

This dinner will be held at the Parnell Hotel in Auckland and is to celebrate the appointment of Andrew Wilkie as the High Commissioner for New Zealand. The present High Commissioner Alan MacDonald will present Andrew with his Warrant as part of the celebrations. Andrew Wilkie is the fourth High Commissioner to represent the Clan Donald High Council.

The Games and the Avenue of Clans start in the morning. The Clan Donald Pavilion will be on site to provide hospitality and information on the various MacDonald Clans. All members and friends are welcome to have a chat and refreshments. There will be a Clans March to the town centre and back in the morning. The Pipe Band Contest starts at midday followed by a Street March. The Tattoo is in the evening beginning before sunset and concluding about 10pm.

156th Turakina Highland Games
Saturday 25th January 2020

The Turakina Highland Games was established in 1864 and is the longest running Highland Games in New Zealand. Clan Donald Wellington will be there to welcome all Clan Donald Members and friends for a chat and refreshments. The Games has solo piping and drumming, plus Highland Dancing in the morning and a Pipe Band Contest in the afternoon. There will also be field events for both children and adults. In the evening there will be a bar-b-que and a ceilidh.

 Clan Donald will be present with the Pavilion in the Avenue of Clans. The Pavilion will be operating for hospitality, genealogy support, recruitment of new members and sales of Clan Donald memorabilia, and anyone wanting to know anything about the MacDonald Clans, Macdonald of Macdonald, Macdonald of Sleat, Macdonald of Clanranald, and MacDonell of Glengarry, just has to ask any of the Committee Members. All of our members and friends are welcome for a chat and a little hospitality. There will be a Haggis Ceremony at 11.30am at the Pavilion, and there will be an opportunity to have a taste.

After the death of her beloved husband, Prince Albert, Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) withdraws from public life, so the court appoints a former servant of the prince, John Brown (Billy Connolly), to help her recover from her grief. Brown’s unorthodox ways and disdain for protocol draws the queen out of her shell, and the brash Scot becomes her sole confidant. However, their growing closeness causes a stir, as scandalous rumours begin circulating about the exact nature of their relationship.

The Turakina Highland Games was established in 1864 and is the longest running Highland Games in New Zealand. Clan Donald Wellington will be there to welcome all Clan Donald Members and friends for a chat and refreshments. The Games has solo piping and drumming, plus Highland Dancing in the morning and a Pipe Band Contest in the afternoon. There will also be field events for both children and adults. In the evening there will be a bar-b-que and a ceilidh.

All Clan Donald Members and friends were invited to the 20th Anniversary Dinner for Clan Donald Auckland, which was held in the Rutherford Room at the Alexandra Raceway, Auckland.

This is a great milestone for Clan Donald Auckland, which was incorporated in 1997.

The Dinner started as usual at 6pm for 6.30pm.There was a fantastic four course banquet dinner. The entertainment included the traditional Haggis Ceremony and our old friends the Balmoral Dancers, and a special appearance of the Auckland Grammar School Pipe Band, which has close links through our Clan Piper Anton Hodson and Harold McIsaac.

The Guest Speaker for the evening was our first President Murdock McDonald , who gave a speech on the Foundation of Clan Donald Auckland.

Waipu Highland Games  – Caledonian Grounds

The Waipu Highland Games are breaking with tradition by holding the Highland Games on a Sunday. In the past the Games have never been held on a Sunday.

Last year the 145th Waipu Highland Games were washed out. Continuous heavy rain caused the games to be cancelled except for the Highland Dancing, which was held in the local school, and the Solo Piping events, which were held in the Waipu Church Hall.

Hopefully the 146th Waipu Highland Games will have kinder weather. Clan Donald has been reappointed as the host clan. It is expected that Alan MacDonald, the New Zealand High Commissioner, and the North Island Commissioner Tom McDonald as well as the South Island Commissioner Elwyn Martin will be present. Clan Donald will also lead the Clans in the Clans March from the Waipu Monument into the Caledonian Grounds. The Pavilion will be sited at the top of the Avenue of Clans and will be ready to receive members and friends for a chat and a little hospitality. Clan Donald memorabilia will also be on sale, and anyone wanting to know anything about the MacDonald Clans, Macdonald of Macdonald, Macdonald of Sleat, Macdonald of Clanranold and MacDonell of Glengarry, just has to ask any of the Committee Members. Great news for all our Clan Donald Members and friends. We have worked hard to keep the price down for the 18th Annual Dinner at the Quality Hotel Parnell in Auckland. The price will stay the same as last year at $65 per person. So make sure you mark the date in your diary. The start time is 6.30pm for 7.00pm.

It was a great evening last year with exceptional service and fantastic food by the hotel, and they have promised to look after our guests on Saturday the 7th.

We received so many favourable comments about the food, especially having dishes for people with special dietary requirements, that we have decided to have the same menu as last year. And just to whet your appetite here is the menu. The Dinner is a Buffet meal and includes Beef Bourguignon, honey glazed ham from the carvery, and Cajun chicken, plus a selection of vegetables. There is also a range of salads and vegetable dishes including a curried sweet potato and orange salad, seashell pasta salad and a pumpkin ravioli. There are also three desserts to choose from. Apple and blueberry crumble with vanilla custard and Chantilly cream, Pavlova with fresh fruit and whipped cream and iced chocolate log with raspberry coulis. A licensed bar is also available. No BYO.

The entertainment will include the Haggis Ceremony and performances by our old friends the Balmoral Dancers.

The highlight of the evening will be an address by Fraser Sim from the Waipu Caledonian Society. He will cover the Waipu Highland Games and the new Celtic Barn. Clan Donald Auckland has been associated with the Waipu Highland Games for over 20 years and was also a contributor to the funding of the Celtic Barn.

All Clan Donald Members and friends are invited to the 17th Annual Dinner at the Quality Hotel Parnell in Auckland. The start time is 6.30pm for 7.00pm

The evenings entertainment includes a Haggis Ceremony and performances by our old friends the Balmoral Dancers. This dance group has given us great entertainment over the years, having attended every dinner since 1998.

The Dinner is a Buffet meal and the menu has a fantastic range of dishes, including Beef Bourguignon, honey glazed ham from the carvery, and Cajun chicken, plus a great selection of vegetables. There is also a range of salads and vegetable dishes including a curried sweet potato and orange salad, seashell pasta salad and a pumpkin ravioli. So our vegetarians are looked after as well. There are also three desserts to choose from. Apple and blueberry crumble with vanilla custard and Chantilly cream, Pavlova with fresh fruit and whipped cream and iced chocolate log with raspberry coulis. A licensed bar is also available. No BYO.

The highlight of the evening will be an address by our Guest Speaker Heather Laird, an expert Fiddler and authority on Scottish Celtic Music.

Clan Donald Hawke’s Bay invites all people interested in Scottish culture to a social evening to hear local Scottish personality, singer musician Charlie McLean talk about his chidhood growing up in the Outer Hebrides. Charlie will also entertain with Scottish music and song. The venue is the Common Room, which is a boutique bar at 227 Heretaunga Street East in Hastings from 7pm till 9pm. Entry is free and food and drinks are available at your own expense from the Common Room bar. Come along and spend a couple of hours relaxing among convivial company, having a couple of quiet drinks, hearing about a fascinating part of Scottish history, and listening to some traditional Scottish music.

Turakina is the oldest Highland Games in New Zealand, and as it is the 150th Games, both Clan Donald Auckland and Clan Donald Wellington will be there in the Pavilion to welcome all Clan Donald members and friends for a chat and refreshments. The Games has solo piping and Highland Dancing in the morning and a Pipe Band Contest in the afternoon, as well as the usual field events.

Clan Donald New Zealand – AGM – Hawke’s Bay

The Annual General Meeting of the Associated Clan Donald Societies of New Zealand was held at the Havelock North Community Centre on Saturday the 4th of May 2013. The programme started with morning tea at 9.30am followed by the meeting. At the conclusion of the meeting members had free time to explore Havelock North. At 6.00pm members met at the Havelock North Community Centre for drinks and socializing followed by a Buffet Dinner at 7.00pm. The menu for the Dinner included Cock-a Leekie Soup; followed by either Scotch Fillet with a delicious Whisky Sauce or Chicken Bonnie Prince Charlie with a Drambuie Sauce and garnished with Sliced Apple. Vegetables included New Potatoes and Fresh seasonal Vegetables with a Creamy Cheese Sauce, and carrots and peas. For Dessert there will be a delicious Cranachan with Apple, Berry and Shortbread, or Fruit Salad. There was a Haggis Ceremony during the evening, and the Haggis was served to the guests with the usual Tatties & Neeps.

The conference will be held at the Spencer on Byron Hotel, Takapuna, Auckland. A Cocktail Party from 5.30pm till 7.00pm on Thursday the 7th. Conference on Friday the 8th, from 9.30am till 4.30pm. Dinner plus entertainment from 7.00pm. Choice of two outings for Saturday the 9th. Either a wine tour of Waiheke Island or the 20th Paeroa Highland Games. A range of other activities will be available to partners and other family members who do not wish to attend the conference, wine tour or the Paeroa Games. The Games and Avenue of Clans started in the morning and Clan Donald attended with the pavilion. March of the Clans in the morning. Pipe Band Contest in the afternoon followed by a Street March. The Tattoo was in the evening, beginning before sunset and concluding about 10 pm.

Burns Night – Hawke’s Bay

Clan Donald members attended this annual event organized by the Hastings and District Scots Society. The venue was the St Andrews Presbyterian Church Hall, Market Street, Hastings. 5.15pm for dinner with Ingleside and old time dancing followed at 8pm. This event has been held regularly for the last 80 years or so. David McDonald, Clan Donald President, was the Master of Ceremonies, a duty he has carried out for many years. It is attended by members of Scots Societies and Caledonian Societies from around Hawke’s Bay, as well as local people. Cost included included dinner, Scottish entertainment, haggis ceremony and dancing.

The Clan Donald pavilion operated for hospitality, genealogy support, recruitment of new members and sales of Clan Donald memorabilia. There was a Haggis Ceremony at 11.30 am at the pavilion and an opportunity to have a taste. Clan Donald sponsored the “Scottish Fiddling Competition” again.

A special Christmas/St Andrews Day dinner will be held at the Havelock North Club, Campbell Street, Havelock North. Starting at 6.30 pm with drinks and socialising followed by the Dinner at 7 pm. The menu has a choice of Angus Scotch Fillet with mashed potatoes and a whisky sauce, or Wild Venison with a blackberry & port sauce on mashed potatoes, or a Fish Pie of smoked fish with prawns and topped with potato & oven baked. This will be followed by a choice of two desserts. Cranachan, raspberries with whisky & honey topped with whipped cream & caramel oats, or Apple Betty, served with vanilla ice cream. There will also be a Haggis Ceremony. The highlight of the evening will be some Highland Dances performed by Lara Hornby accompanied by our Clan Piper Maurice Chisnall. Lara is a very talented young dancer who is going to Scotland next year to compete on the Scottish Highland Dance circuit. Clan Donald New Zealand has awarded her a sponsorship and the cheque will be presented to her on the night. This promises to be a vey enjoyable evening. Cost $35 per person. Hororata Highland Games – Canterbury

A complete range of Highland Games events including solo piping; highland dancing; pipe band competition; heavy athletics, caber tossing, hammer throw, tossing the sheaf and tug’o’war. There will also be running events; woodchopping and stalls selling local produce and crafts. The final event for the games is a Ceilidh starting at 6.30 pm in the Hororata Domain Gliding Hanger. A pre-games event for pipers will be held at the Glentunnel Hall at 7 pm on Friday the 4th of November. On Sunday the 6th November  there will be a piping and drumming workshop at the Hororata Hall starting at midday. Tickets for the games, $15 per adult, $4 per child, $40 per family, are available from all Selwyn District Libraries or online at www.ticketdirect.co.nz
Gate sales $20 per adult, $5 per child and $50 per family. All profits will be reinvested in the local community to help rebuild post quake.

Kirking of the Tartan – Canterbury

There will not be a Scottish Heritage Week this year because of the earthquake, but the Heritage Council will hold a Kirking of the Tartan at St Andrew’s Church at Rangi Ruru, which is undamaged. A new venue will need to be located for the afternoon tea.

Waipu Highland Games, Caledonian Grounds

Members of the committee will be at the Caledonian Grounds from about 2 pm the previous day to erect the pavilion in the Avenue of Clans.

The pavilion will be operating for hospitality, genealogy support, recruitment of new members and sales of Clan Donald memorabilia. There will be a Haggis Ceremony at 11.30 am at the pavilion and there will be an opportunity to have a taste. Clan Donald is sponsoring the Fiddling Competition and we anticipate that some of the contestants will entertain outside the pavilion during the day.

Among the distinguished guests is Dr Angus MacDonald, visiting for six months from Scotland, where he is a member of the Clan Donald Lands Trust. He is also one of the top pipers in Scotland. Dr Angus will be judging Piobaireachd at Waipu.

The evenings entertainment will include a Ceilidh band, The Real McCoy, and Catherine Fraser a renowned Fiddler. Plus competitions, spot prizes and a superb dinner and Haggis Ceremony. Crofters Luncheon, St John’s Anglican Hall Royal Oak

This is a first for our calendar.  The theme of the luncheon fits with the subsistence lifestyle of the crofters.  The meal will start at 1 pm with fare including vegetable bake, shepherds pie, baps and apple pie with whipped cream.  There will be a glass of cider to go with your meal.
We will count this a success when we have got 75 booked for the event, and the price $25 per person should not break the bank!  With a fortnight to go there were more than 60 places booked so check with Alison Williams during business hours at (09) 414 4530 in case the full house sign goes up in early November.

Lions Book Fair, Hawke’s Bay Showgrounds – Hastings

A contingent is traveling from Auckland to Hastings to set up the Clan Donald pavilion at the Lions Book Fair.  The opening hours are 8 am – 4 pm Saturday and 9.30 – 1 pm Sunday at the Hawkes Bay Showgrounds on Kennilworth Road, Hastings.

The aim is to put Clan Donald in the public eye at an event which attracts thousands of the local population.
